Albert Pepermans
About Albert Pepermans
Painter and graphic artist Albert Pepermans is described in his recently published monograph as a ‘serial painter’. From the 1980’s he gained an international reputation, and his work was exhibited in galleries and venues from New York, to Berlin, Zurich, and Paris. Direct and rebellious characteristics emerge from his work, whether figurative or abstract, as well as a certain modesty and melancholy. His paintings and performances are rooted in the turbulent 60’s: Pop Art, anarchist events and rock ‘n’ roll. An admirer of Dada, underground comics and, later, of the New Fauves, he is strongly connecting with the anarchy of punk. In 1987, Pepermans’ work is presented in the Brussels Museum of Modern Art, in 1994 at Documenta IX in Germany and in the 90’s he collaberated with Hugo Claus. In 2002, the world exhibition in Hannover selected the work of Pepermans for the Belgian Pavilion.
Born in 1947.
