About Franco Fontana

Italian photographer Franco Fontana developed his distinctive style under the influence of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism in the late 1960's. Painters as Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman inspired him to develop a unique visual language that embraced colour. Typical of his work is the focus on colour and form, which differentiated him from the at that time predominant classical black-and-white art photography. Fontana nowadays is recognized as a key pioneer of artistic colour photography. His work is held in some of the world's most prestigious collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
