João Freitas
Born in 1989 in Coimbra, João Freitas moved to Brussels in 2009 to study drawing at La Cambre. He now lives and works in Luxembourg and Brussels.
Whether through wear and tear, sanding or burning, folding, sewing or crumpling, João Freitas reveals the material, giving it a transcendent quality. The artist's work is repetitive, almost meditative work of removing, butchering, tearing and scratching, which reveals the underlying reality.
In 2015, Freitas won the Young Talent Prize at Art On Paper and subsequently exhibited at BOZAR. In 2020 he will be exhibiting at the Centre Tour à Plomb cultural centre
(Brussels). João Freitas' work can be found in private and public collections such as that of the Belgian collector Galila Barzilaï-Hollander and that of the film producer and contemporary art collector Frédéric de Goldschmidt as well as the collections of the Fondation Carrefour des Arts and the City of Dudelange.
