About Ritsart Gobyn
The works of Ritsart Gobyn resemble studies for artworks rather than artworks in themselves, much like pinboards on which the artist has attached bits of collected material (pieces of tape, paper scraps, post-its, fragments from art-historical masterpieces). They point to a sense of unfinishedness, to a creative process not yet completed, to a search that has only just begun. But the artist cleverly deceives the viewer: the perception of unfinishedness gives way to the opposite once it becomes clear that the tape, paper scraps and even the folds in the canvas are painted trompe l’oeils. Ritsart Gobyn investigates how the trompe l’oeil, as a visual strategy, can make the viewer aware of the creative process itself by creating the illusion that the traces of this process are visible on the canvas. He conducts this research not only as a visual artist, but it has also resulted in a doctoral degree at LUCA School of Arts of KU Leuven.
