About Svelte Thys

Svelte Thys is a young female Belgian painter whose colourful work is steeped in intentional slowness. Although her paintings are bursting with colour, she invites she viewer to step onto a slower road that lingers around discovery and quiet contemplation. Texture is central to her practice. By mixing oil paint with talc, the oil recedes, leaving only pure pigment behind: matte, muted planes in which the eye of the beholder might dissolve are juxtaposed with glossy layers of paint that hold the viewer at a distance. The canvas becomes a terrain of intimacy and detachment, closeness and withdrawal. This particular rhythm is the joyful game Thys likes to play, also by adding whimsical titles to the paintings. They are, however, only subtle signposts that guide imagination without imposing a single meaning. For Thys, this is the gift of visual language: the image belongs to all, but its interpretation remains deeply personal.
