About the exhibition in Waterloo
The exhibition presents Johan Heylen's universe, a universe inhabited by creatures desperately searching for what lies beyond the world, for the primary cause, for Truth.
The artworks are inspired by the work of mystics, existentialists and metaphysicians. The incomprehensibility of ‘Being’ and man's place in this mystery is a recurring theme. Creatures wander around with no hope of salvation or forgiveness, unaware of their guilt and unable to understand their punishment. Despite the essential misery, Johan Heylen's work contains a vulnerability and tenderness.
