Maurice Boel

About Maurice Boel

Maurice Boel was born into an art-loving environment in Ostend and studied at the Brussels Academy under Paul Mathieu and Alfred Bastien. His long artistic career, which extended into the mid-1990s, was marked by constant reinvention and experimentation. In the 1930s, he painted socially engaged Expressionist works inspired by Constant Permeke, whose son Pol was a close friend of his. In the early 1950s, Boel moved to Paris to continue his studies. At that time, the Parisian art world was captivated by abstraction, which inspired Boel to leave figurative art behind. In 1952, through his second wife Opie, he developed an interest in tapestry and textile art. During the 1960s, his abstract work evolved from a stark and rather cool verticalism toward a more lyrical abstraction. His stay in Italy at the beginning of the 1960s likely gave rise to his use of richer colour nuances and greater warmth through silver and gold-like tones.

Born in 1913, passed away in 1998.
