About Mathilde Nardone

The young artist Mathilde Nardone anchors her work in a research-driven, photographic approach using a scanner. She presents this technique as a full-fledged image-making medium. This approach also allows her to project her "still lifes" into the contemporary world.

Mathilde draws inspiration from the mines. Her maternal grandparents, who immigrated from Italy, came to work in the mines. She finds inspiration in her grandmother's stories and in the encounters she has with former miners or their descendants. While exploring the mines, she observes how nature—especially plants and flowers—gradually reclaims these sites. To her, the mountains of mining waste, become true open-air composts of beauty.

During her walks, she collects flowers that she scans directly to create photographs. She experiments with different types of scanners and sometimes adds elements (such as condensation) to achieve various visual effects.
